"Do you know when you'll be interviewing Haim?" an inquiry arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their fourth member."

However, there remains a key snag: The sender also longs to be Haim's fourth member. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile admirers have openly begged for the honor.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are repeated Grammy hopefuls.

Like all the best bands, they're a close unit. Their videos frequently depict them walking in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such pure joy you can't help but think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'After your show, I bought a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That's the ultimate honor. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate others to start a band."

"So anyone gets an invitation to be the honorary member of Haim."

Grammy Milestone

The group have called into home, where they're recovering after an major tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in contention for the prize.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the nomination resonates with the trio.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major step," says Alana. "However we're just thankful for the women that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Candor

The record was born from a phase of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The words track departures and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them determining in the moment who they are becoming.

"I adore description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That recent toughness demanded a different sonic direction – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The trio's candor inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic tales.

One man left Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Future

One can easily sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their position in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an global fan base.

However Haim will consistently be their top focus.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was a young child," says Alana. "There is no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
