Hurricane Melissa is predicted to strengthen into a infrequent highest-level cyclone as it shifts towards the Caribbean island, bringing deadly sudden floods and rock falls.

The hurricane, which had winds of up to 120 mph as of 6:00 AM GMT, is currently turning toward the northwest in the Caribbean region and is projected to reach land by midweek, according to weather experts.

Warnings of electricity outages and structural damage have been announced as the hurricane generates up to 76cm of rain and coastal flooding as high as thirteen feet above typical tides. "Seek shelter now," inhabitants have been told.

This hurricane is the thirteenth storm in the current Atlantic storm period, which normally finishes in late autumn.

Alerts are also active for regions of Haiti including the capital, Port au Prince, the adjacent nation and Cuba's eastern region, where this storm is expected to bring similar effects by the midweek period.

Landslides already being caused by the hurricane have resulted in two fatalities in Haiti, according to local authorities.

Melissa is projected to move across the island nation by midweek before traveling via the Antillas Mayores and entering the Atlantic Ocean.
