In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an bold commencement to his administration.

A Historic Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing basic services: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
